The shoulder-strap on a Heer uniform gives several informations about the uniform.
1.) The shoulder strap has a piping with the color of arm. It indicates the type of unit the soldier serves in. See the color of arms table for a detailed overview.

2.) The shoulder strap sometimes shows the number, the name (initials) of the unit or the department. The numbers and letters are often written in old style fonts and not easy to read. See also the color of arms table for special letters or initials. The numbers, letters etc. are written in the color of arm. Arabic or roman numbers on the button of the shoulder strap indicates the Kompanie/Batterie/Battalion/Schwadron etc. See a list of letters, numbers on shoulder straps.
